Arrived in Deerfield safely yesterday after 16 hours of driving: 9 on the first day, 7 on the second. It sure do love the Mini, it made the ride not only comfortable, but actually fun and enjoyable. Although I did notice that the number of strangers who want to talk to you just because they see you with a Mini is amazing. Both times that I stopped for gas, someone said "nice car" to me. And at one of the rest areas on the Mass Pike, some guy wandered up to me, pointed out his own Mini, and then wanted to exchange 'Mini-owning-stories.' But I fled as quick as I could. I'm glad you like my car: but you're a stranger & I have no interest in telling you about my car or hearing your stories about your version of my car. Boo you. Friends & family, I will talk to you about my car all you want. Strangers in the parking lot? No.
Sorry that this post is taking me so long to write. I'm having so much fun here with Jess that I hate to take time away from things to write.
Today, we went to Lowell to see the mills. I've never been there before, obviously, and quite enjoyed the place. It's run by the National Park Service, and they have done a good job. It's not anything original or unique in terms of museum setup, but it is thorough and nicely set up. I'll post some pictures later. I did wish they had a better selection of books available in the gift shop, because I was curious & wanted to learn more. But all they had looked boring -- or were young adult books & looked boring. Terrible. And their postcards were lame & uninteresting, so I didn't get any. But I have plenty from other days, so that's fine.
Yesterday, Jess & I drove up to Brattleboro & Newfane, Vermont to do some exploring. Jess' grandparents used to live in Newfane, and the whole place struck me as Jess' version of a Vermont-style Stoots. It was truly gorgeous countryside: the mountains and the river made for a striking drive and there were lots of picturesque little brooks next to country stores and that sort of thing. Loved it. I understand why so many people love the state, although I'm not sure if I would agree with their assessments of it being the best state in the country. But I keep that opinion under wraps up here -- Vermonters seemed a little touchy on the subject.
Jess' nephew (and parents, who I met when I went to Ireland with Jess & them last spring) is here too, baby Quinn is about 3 months old. He's adorable, and I'm having lots of fun playing with him. He spit up on me tonight though, but to be fair, I deserved it. I'd been laughing about an earlier spit up which was very well timed & executed.
I should stop this, it's getting late. Rather than hang on to this entry and try to add more later, I'm going to post this and then do more in a later post.
Also, this website angers me: http://newriveroaks.com/index.html.
